Behold. My very first crochet project. An amigurumi octopus. Small, blue, and slightly unhinged… just like its maker.
This little sea gremlin came to life using a free octopus crochet pattern by Mariska Vos (click here for pattern).
All credit where credit is due, because this pattern gently held my hand while I questioned all my life choices.
I used Scheepjes Catona yarn in my beloved “Tropic” blue, because if I’m going to wrestle yarn for the first time, it might as well feel like a holiday. The color screams ocean vibes, summer mood, and “I definitely knew what I was doing” (I did not).
One eye is slightly bigger, giving this octopus a permanent look of mild surprise, like it just realized it has eight arms and zero clue how they work. Honestly, same.
This project taught me many important things:
• Counting is important
• Stitch markers are not optional
• Yarn frogs are real (rip it, rip it)
• And most importantly: octopi forgive beginners
Is it perfect? No.
Is it cute? Absolutely.
Did it steal my heart and convince me crochet is witchcraft? 100%.
From zero crochet skills to one slightly wonky octopus. I am officially hooked.
Next project? Who knows. But this little tentacled friend will always be my first ink-redible achievement.
